America's sixth, and newest, television network announced a deal today that will give them a direct affiliate relationship in Washington DC. This avoids what could have been a major embarrasment to the network, to begin life without a station in the nation's capital.
Liberty Television's prime time programming will be carried, complete with duo identification on WPXW-TV 66.3, which is owned by the Ion Network and currently carries Ion Life, dedicated to lifestyle programming.
In return WPXW is receiving a huge boost of its own from Liberty. The network will establish, maintain, and pay for a nation's capital newsdesk. WPXW will essentially be receiving a free news department which will launch them into the lucrative local news market. Liberty will also be using this newsdesk to cover the nation's capital for the network. Ion is also throwing in some launch advertising on its main feed WPXW 66.1.
Washington DC is the 9th largest DMA in the US, and was the biggest hole in the Liberty line-up. The biggest DMA without an affiliate is now #31 Kansas City.
