Hollywood, California
Liberty Television today announced what it hopes to be its signature show of the winter season, starting January 2010. At this point the working name for the show is simply "Guitar Heroes". Juding will be based on three criteria; 1) audience responsiveness (to mimic the game where the crowd gets more appreciative the better you play), 2) the computer (the technical side of how well the player does, the computer will spit out an analyis which at sometimes will be quite rude, and will firmly put the computer as the villian of the show), 3) judges (who will primarily judge the competitors on their showmanship).
Players will compete to win a prize package which will include a southern California vacation home (complete with pool, Ferrari, recording studio, and movie/gaming theatre, and all the swag needed to live the Guitar Hero lifestyle). The winner will also be booked to open some live concerts for major recording acts. Finally, the likeness and abilities of the winner will be built into a future release of a Guitar Hero version.
While the judges have not yet been finalized there are negotiations ongoing with Joe Perry & Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, Gary Moore (solo & Thin Lizzy), Joan Jett, Aldo Nova, Daniel Lanois (producer), Bob Rock (producer), David Bottrill (producer), Craig Billmeier (air guitar world champion), Cole Manson (Air guitar).
A voting mechanism using the internet is also being worked out, much like American Idol uses a phone line.
Guitar Heroes is scheduled to be split over two nights, with the typical performance night and the follow-up results show each being one hour. A two hour premiere and two hour finale are probable.
Liberty Television is hoping this show will be a success, and is relying on buzz from the concept to help bring in more network affiliates. This is an example of using the PLS media group's (parent company to Liberty Television) synergies to help grow the network brand. Activision which owns the Guitar Hero brand is also a minority owner in PLS Media. For its part Liberty Television admits it had several other offers to produce a reality competition show based on Guitar Hero, but had always passed on the offers due to concerns of artistic control as well as the watering down of the brand name. However, given their interest in seeing Liberty succeed they have willingly thrown their name and resources behind this project.
