Miracle at St. Anna (2008) (spike Lee, black WW2 movie) 6/10
**slow moving plot, very strange at times
Basic (2003) (John Travolta, Samuel Jackson, military mystery) 6/10
**just not all that engaging, one of those mysteries that you really don't have much chance of figuring out on your own. Didnt care for the ending.
Here is a list of movies that I have seen in the past year that I rated at least an 8/10. I need to update my list of favorite movies;
Gran Torino (2008) 9/10
Clint Eastwood's swan song, he's amazing and the story is great. The rest of the cast is so-so. Best movie I've seen since "In Bruges"
Blood Diamond (2006) 8/10
Leonardo DiCaprio. I thought it was just going to be another jungle action type movie. But it had a lot of the political stuff of africa as a backdrop, which I really like. Uncomfortably realistic violence at times, shocking.
High School Musical 3 (2008) 8/10
I saw it opening weekend in a theatre full of screaming girls. Sometimes how much you like a movie can depend on your watching experience. If I had just seen this one on TV I wonder if I would reallyhave given it an 8/10. This generation's "Grease", a whole lot of fun.
Glory Road (2006) 8/10
Basketball, overcoming racism movie. I expected a 6/10 sort of watchable movie, but it was very engaging.
Traitor (2008) 8/10
Don Cheadle at his best.
Yes Man (2008) 8/10
Another movie I thought would be "okay". Not a big Jim Carey fan but this is his best film, right up there with Cable Guy. I liked both the comedy, and the "message".
On The Waterfront (1954) 8/10
Many old black and white movies end up disapointing me, like Citizen Kane, and most Hitchcock stuff. Add Marlon Brando to a list of this eras actors I will now try and catch more stuff from (James Cagney & Humphrey Bogart are on that list). Timeless movie.
Rocky Balboa (2006) 8/10
I thought it was going to suck, but had to see it eventually. I was blown away. It was the closest thing to the original, and not the cheeze and glam of II-V. Rocky has spent enough time alone with introspection, that he ends up coming off as a very wise man. Sometimes you see a preview and wonder if you saw all the best parts of the movie. The strange thing is there was this very funny line in the preview where Rocky says "It ain't over till its over", and his opponent says "what's that from the 90's", and Rocky mutters "actually its from the 80's." Strange that wasn't even included in the movie itself in the final cut.
Network (1976) 8/10
A great movie to see as a primer for this game. Its about a network news room and programming department having conflict over the integrity of the news versus entertainment and ratings. Didn't care for the end of the movie where it gets a bit absurd though. Check it out.
