Most networks make limited use of design, however, utilizing little more then a logo and the latest look in background graphics and typography. Some networks are easily recognized by their distinctive logos; CBS's eye, NBC's simplified peacock, MTV's giant M etc.
In an environment with hundreds of channels, a unique visual look can cause viewers to stop and take notice. In other words, good design can be a competitive advantage.
Promos: At many stations and networks, on-air promos are an afterthought, a necessary process but not one held in high esteem. This is foolish thinking. TV Land and Nickelodeon have both been very clever in utilizing their promos to help to establish brand identity, which has caused viewers to watch programs that they might otherwise bypass.
Ideally promos are produced as on-air marketing campaigns, scheduled long in advance and developed with optimal resources.
