Liberty television today unveiled a bit more of the terms of their big deal with Relativity Media and their subsiduary Rogue Pictures. Relativity is a minority owner in PLS Media which is the parent company of Liberty TV.
The deal will see Liberty TV air prime time movies on Friday nights from Relativity's catalogue. Due to the bulk nature of the buy, the price will be reduced, and Relativity will also take a certain number of commercial spots to advertise upcoming movies. The result will be a cheap source of programming on Friday nights for Liberty that should ensure a profit for it and its affiliates on the dead zone of network television. On the downside, it will likely hurt overall network averages.
The second part of this deal which is a prime example of the synergies that Liberty will have to find in order to make headway in the crowded television content market, is signing up a prime time show "Croatoan" which will be jointly owned and produced by Liberty and Relativity. The key here for Relativity is a guaranteed string of payments for using one of their sound stages for the weekly program. In addition a second show "1968" has been signed to be made by Relativity, and is a three way deal between Liberty, Relativity, and History TV.
